The First All-Electric Cargo Ship in the World – Powered by 26-Ton Lithium Battery

When talking about important developments and creations on earth, we cannot deny that the existing cargo vessels or freight ships are part of them. One of the vital functions of a cargo ship is that is transport different materials and goods from one place to another by traversing the ocean to complete a scheduled transaction.

To date, there are thousands of available cargo ships and they continue to serve as important equipment for worldwide trading in different nations. They exist in different sizes, mechanisms and capabilities, among others. Of course, they are exceptionally heavy and can live for years depending on the design for life expectancy when using these massive sea-based equipments.

If we discuss about intriguing and unbelievable advancements today about the shipping industry, China is again making history when it created the first all-electric cargo ship in the world. According from the shared information through, they already launched the massive vessel in Guangzhou (Guangdong province’s capital area) and weigh about 6,000 metric tons.

This latest created huge cargo ship features various technological breakthrough and utilizes lithium battery, which makes it the first-ever cargo to have this kind of interesting feature. The responsible company in manufacturing this Chinese giant shipping vessel is the Guangzhou Shipyard International, which is the first-ever company that build ships for China as well as for Hong Kong.

As detailed online, CSSC Offshore & Marine Engineering (Group) Company Ltd. is the full owner of the ship under the China State Shipbuilding Corporation Group.

“As the ship is fully electric powered, it poses no threats to the environment. The technology will soon be likely … used in passenger or engineering ships,” Huang Jialin stated as quoted online.

Jialin is the chair and general manager of Hangzhou Modern Ship Design & Research Co. (the designer of the first electric cargo vessel).

The ship is about 70.5 meters in length and can load up to 2,000 metric tons of cargo, while traveling with a speed of 80 kilometers. According to the media reports in China, the charging time of its 26 tons lithium battery is about 2 hours and can travel about 12.8 kilometers an hour while traversing the ocean. Global Times likewise reported that the first all-electric powered cargo ship does not emit sulphur, carbon, PM2.5 and not using any sort of fossil fuel to operate.

Likewise, it is possible to use it as a passenger vessel because of this kind of safety features. During the inauguration, they loaded it with thermal coal and traveled the Pearl River to ship the cargo to the areas surrounding the river.

“This kind of ship takes into consideration the harmony between humans and nature and can protect water quality and marine life, and should be copied by other ships sailing on local rivers,” Beijing environmentalist Wang Yongchen stated during an interview as quoted by online.

The General Manager of Guangzhou Shipyard International Chen Ji likewise stated that the main purpose of inventing such massive electric-powered is to serve the people within the Pearl River by transporting the coal for electric consumption in the entire area. With this kind of development, the country will have an opportunity to reduce its spending for the shipping costs because this is more practical than using conventional fossil fuels.

As for Lai Kee-hung, the creation of the first all-electric cargo ship in the world is a remarkable breakthrough in reducing the risks of pollution because majority of the existing cargo ships are polluting the environment because of releasing damaging emissions.

Kee-hung is a professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University who studies different sustainability and logistics problems.
