HIGH ALTITUDE PLATFORM EBOOK!
Facebook, another believer in internet through high-altitude platforms, sometimes called pseudo-satellites, successfully test-flew its Aquila. PDF | High-altitude platforms (HAPs) are aircraft, usually unmanned airships or airplanes positioned above 20 km, in the stratosphere, in order. P2 • Situated 17 - 22 km altitude (up to 72, ft). Airship evolution: High Altitude Platforms ('HAPs'). Airships: • Solar powered. • Unmanned. • Helium filled.

The platforms need a very long high altitude platform to accomodate a sufficient amount of solar cells but at high altitude platform same time need to be extremely lightweight. That makes them vulnerable to bending and breaking when subjected to strong wind gusts.
Balloons are the most mature market for HAPs with 50 percent of all programs currently operational.

It was to use solar cells to provide its power and would be unmanned during its flight. A subscale demonstrator unit for this project, high altitude platform "High Altitude Long Endurance-Demonstrator" HALE-D was built by Lockheed Martin and launched on a test flight on July 27, to demonstrate key technologies critical to the development of unmanned airships.

It descended and landed at a speed of about 20 feet per high altitude platform in a heavily forested area in Pennsylvania. To date none of these designs have received approval from the FAA to fly in U.
Stratospheric airship efforts are being developed in at least five countries. South Korea has been conducting flight tests for several years with a vehicle from Worldwide Aeros.
Avealto HAPs are a viable alternative to existing telecommunications satellite services in many market segments due to the significantly lower cost, lower latency and lower error rate. Avealto has conducted extensive meetings with leading experts in the aeronautics and telecommunications industries to understand the current technical, commercial and regulatory situation with regard to HAPs.

The Avealto HAP will both complement and compete with many existing telecommunication services. The Avealto HAP will open up completely new markets that could not be effectively served before. Their orbital speed is allows them to remain over the exact same position as the earth turns.
This allows high altitude platform ground based antenna to be fixed in position to send and receive radio signals to and from the satellite.
High Altitude Platforms to Generate $1.7 Billion in Revenue, Says NSR
Launch failure is a constant risk. This is highly noticeable on voice calls transmitted by satellite. This millisecond second delay also reduces the high altitude platform of error correction for data transmissions which can severely limited the capacity of bandwidth.
To maintain orbit they must travel at a higher speed and change their position relative to the ground very quickly.
How close are high-altitude platforms to competing with satellites?
Iridium and Globalstar currently operate a constellation of satellites. In very high density high altitude platform or between major population centers fiber optic cables can be the best option.
Fiber Optic lines link major cities in much of the world.
Fiber Optic cables going undersea and overland connect most major population centers in the world. Fiber Optic cables are costly to install and maintain. They are cost effective when a large amount of bandwidth is needed between the points served. high altitude platform
They may not be cost effective when smaller amount of capacity need to be delivered to multiple points. Fiber Optic systems must have regenerative equipment at regular intervals along high altitude platform route to re-amplify the light signals used to send data. Point-to-point terrestrial microwave can provide a significant amount of bandwidth between any two points that have a direct line of sight.
