Down a Dark Hall - Wikipedia

Blackwood, Jules explains, targets young people with the ability to connect with the other side and that each of the students selected has some form of this gift. Madame Duret brought these girls to Blackwood because the spirits of deceased owners walk its halls, giving it a thin barrier between this life and the next.

It is here that she can use the girls to channel great minds of the past - artists, musicians, writers, mathematicians, scientists - and continue the work they could not finish before their death. Kit begs him to let them leave, afraid of what these connections could mean, but Jules refuses.

Kit tells the other girls minus Lynda, who has locked herself in her room to paint what she discovered. As the girls investigate this new information, they discover that Professor Farley has been hoarding their letters instead of mailing them and that if they do not leave Blackwood before Christmas vacation, the psychic bonds will be lois duncan down a dark hall and they will never be free from the harassment of the dead.

LOIS DUNCAN DOWN A DARK HALL EBOOK

Isolated at the school fifteen miles from the village without Internet and with their handwritten letters going unreturned, the girls have no choice but try to survive until Christmas break.

To a critical thinker, Down a Dark Hall is one of the most implausible books I've ever read keep in mind it's my first foray into Young Adult fiction. Even by the standards of the day it was originally published, it's difficult to accept that parents would enroll their little princesses in an uncredentialed boarding school overrun by ghosts, particularly one lois duncan down a dark hall their daughter is unable to contact them by phone, fax or email.

The girls are discouraged from simply going AWOL by the presence of some spikes atop the fenceline I'm for real. All of this makes the belief in psychic phenomena and ghosts seem credible by comparison.

At 49, words, the novel is a quick read and an elementary one. On a superficial level, Kit seems unburdened by anything that Nancy Drew hadn't encountered in one of her mysteries, or Scooby Doo for that matter.

Down a Dark Hall

What elevates Kit above other children's sleuths and makes Down a Dark Hall compelling is its emotional depth. From the beginning, Kit is given reason to mistrust adults and lois duncan down a dark hall both alienated and powerless.

Duret's honest and irresistibly handsome son Jules considers the whole undertaking a noble experiment -- until he learns the fate of his mother's previous pupils and sees the nasty creations of some dirty-minded deceased artists who have been insinuating their way into the nocturnal dictation sessions.

We aren't let in on the unpleasant details, but of course by this time it's too late anyway.
