A long-lived totoaba can reach two metres long and weigh over 90 kilograms.
Like the vaquita, adult totoaba are only found in the Gulf of California but they spawn in the Colorado river delta.
Larval and juvenile stages occupy the Colorado delta, while the adult breeding population lives totoaba macdonaldi most of the year in deeper water towards the middle of the Sea totoaba macdonaldi Cortez.
The adult population migrates to the Colorado delta in April and May to spawn. Adults then migrate back south along totoaba macdonaldi west coast for the rest of the year. Juveniles remain in the upper Gulf of California for two years before beginning this migration pattern.
They begin reproducing after another 4 years for females and 5 years for males. It is believed totoaba macdonaldi they can live up to 25 years.
Because of historical and current overfishing, the once maximum size of cm for the species has been greatly reduced. Fish totoaba macdonaldi Wildlife Service noted that diversion of the Colorado River has converted the formerly brackish-water habitat, in the extreme northern Gulf of California, into a hypersaline environment, drastically altering the nursery grounds of the Totoaba Guevaraand altering the life history of the species Totoaba macdonaldi et al.
Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: There is currently a debate concerning its conservation status and whether it can be used as a fishery resource.
Unfortunately, basic information on biological and genetic population structure of the species is lacking. We sampled individuals and employed 16 microsatellite loci and 3 mitochondrial DNA markers 16S, pb; COI, pb; control region, pb to assess population structure and demography of totoaba in the Gulf of California, with samples from locations that encompass nearly all of totoaba macdonaldi recognized geographic distribution.

Recent studies indicate that the totoaba population has stabilized at a low level, perhaps a bit larger than when the commercial fishery was banned in Totoabas are still caught as by-catch in fishing for other finned fish and for shrimp, and in illegal fishing for totoaba directly.
We could not reject a hypothesis of panmixia for totoaba, using totoaba macdonaldi or mitochondrial markers.
